Blog Post 7

The Networked Student
Wendy Drexler

The classroom now has so many learning tools.  The students learn through connectivism.  Connectivism is the ability to learn through social networking.   A topic can be addressed in the classroom and also through technology.  The teacher is a great source of information.  The abilities of computers and looking for new and insightful information is overwhelming but can be such a wonderful instrument.  PLN, blogging, pod casts, Google search, are all good examples of technical knowledge for students.  Why would you need a teacher in the classroom when you have so much technology present?  The maturity of students is not ready to "weed out" the info that is harmful.  Teachers are there to model good practices of computer use, as well as, morality.  They are there to be good facilitators and voices of reason for the students.  A teacher is a source of great information and an organizer of that info.  The need for educators is still here and not forgotten.

There are still many needs for teachers in the classroom.  As we know, teaching is just not teaching.  A positive adult influence is needed in the classroom.  Technology is terrific, but how do students learn to work ethically?  Teachers are still needed in the classroom.

A 7th Grader's Personal Learning Environment

A personal learning environment is also known as a PLN.  This includes contacts or websites that you use everyday.  There is an ability to take notes and organize your thoughts.  This has all of the new information for each class that is being taught.  Asking opinions about certain topics to scientists around the world is possible.  Posting on your blog and others everyday can be there on your PLN.  Digital Glogster is a digital poster that your can put your information about a book or topic there on that poster.  Freedom of the internet is there everyday.  This freedom helps these kids stay on task even though they have social media at their fingertips.

The PLN sounds great to me.  My personal learning environment would consists of websites for EDM
and Facebook.  Those would be only a few.  I think your PLN would change from semester to semester.  Then, teaching this will change again.  I thought it was funny glogster was talked about.  Glogster is something that I have actually seen and heard of.  My sister has used this in her classroom.  She learned of this through going to workshops.  I thought it was a neat idea for even a 7th grader to have a PLN.

  1. Hey Tina, I read your blog today and I must say it seems as if you are aware of the overall concept of the two videos, however, I did find a few things that you might need to work on. In my honest opinion it seems as if you might have been rushed to finish this assignment because there were several little mistakes that by reading over your post a second time could have been prevented. I noticed that your sentences seem to be a little choppy and do not flow well from one sentence to the next. I think you could fix this really easily by adding in proper punctuation to combine a few sentences. An example would be your first three sentences. I also noticed that your spacing was off in the last paragraph, you added in a break in the middle of a sentence. A few other things I noticed was that you picture, although a great and relative picture, didn’t have proper ALT and TITLE modifiers, as well as there was no link for the networked student video only the 7th graders ple. I’d also suggest that you didn’t put the link to the video as the title because it is a little hard to find that way, I’d add it in to my introductory sentence. Like I said I really think you understood the information presented, I just think you were rushed to finish this assignment. Be sure to preview your post to make sure all spacing issues are cleared up, publish your post and check for working links and modifiers, and always read over your post to make sure it flows well.

  2. Tina,

Your post was well written and I can see you understand the importance of teachers even in the 21st century. This is good! I did notice that your alt and title modifiers on your picture are backwards! The title tag should have the source of the image. Also you are missing a clickable link for your first section. These are all quick fixes!
